Explore the legacy of the MAVA Foundation, a family-led Swiss philanthropic fund that distributed over CHF 1.14 billion to global nature conservation and biodiversity projects.
Overview
MAVA Foundation (Fondation pour la Nature) was a leading family-led, Swiss-based philanthropic foundation dedicated to nature conservation and biodiversity protection. Founded in 1994 by the late Dr. Luc Hoffmann—an extraordinary naturalist and co-founder of WWF—the foundation operated as a critical funding vehicle for global environmental initiatives.
Unlike traditional perpetual endowments, MAVA was structurally designed to sunset. In accordance with its founder’s long-term vision, the foundation executed its final strategic phase between 2016 and 2022, entirely ceasing grant-making operations at the end of 2022 and officially wrapping up its final administrative presence in mid-2023. Over its 28-year lifecycle, MAVA distributed over CHF 1.14 billion across 1,500 conservation projects globally.
